Next School Board meeting: Thursday, Aug 19, 1999. Address: 1829 Denver West Blvd, Bld 27. This building is west of the Denver West Marriott. Please forward this website (by print or email) to as many concerned citizens of Jeffco Schools as possible. As promised, I have obtained a copy of the executive summary for the Jeffco Schools purposed budget. In my review, you will begin to see that Jeffco School district truly has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. Fact #1The expected revenue from County and State taxes has increased more then $10 Million for the 1999-2000 budget. Fact #2Jeffco Schools employs 7 Area Administrators with an average salary over $90,000. A comparable position in Littleton School District earns less than $78,000.Fact #3The Child Care Enterprise fund is scheduled to receive a transfer of $2.5 Million from our General Fund this year. In case you are wondering, an Enterprise fund is suppose to be self supporting. Since this one is not, your tax dollars are subsidizing high priced child care which spends over $7 Million on salaries.FACT #4The projected savings to the budget by increasing the walking distance to school for hundreds of children across the district is only $225,000. Please join me in expressing your concern with wasteful spending at Jeffco Schools, by calling, writing or visiting your Jeffco School Board of Education. You can find contact information at the end of this message.More information is forth coming.Thank you for your time,Kent HallFor those of you just now joining my email list, the following is a copy of the first email that I sentIs the sting of increasing school fees still on your mind? Then consider the following questions- What happened to public funded education? - How is it that charter schools are thriving on 80% of the budget of our neighborhood schools? - Why does your local school ask for textbook fees when they do not spend it all on textbooks?- Why has Bus Service, Band Instruction, Sports Programs, and quality education in general been threatened by budget cuts?I would tell you liars and thieves, but that is for you to decide. Here are some facts. 1) The current Jeffco Schools? budget is larger than last year, and the year before. Printouts of the budgets are available from Jeffco Schools. 2) Soon after the tragic Columbine HS events, Jeffco Schools claimed they needed an increase of more than $10 Million to remove the scars. Further inquire revealed that it was ALL covered by insurance. Furthermore, on Sat, August 7, 1999 the Denver Post reported that $1.2 Million covered the damage.3) We heard cries and complaints, ?Colorado ranks 48th nationally on the percent of revenue spent per child.? The fact is State Tax Revenue has increased so dramatically that available funds outperformed the real need. Colorado spends Millions more on education each year. When you have numbers like this on the revenue side of the budget, you must consider that revenue may not be the problem; we may have a spending problem.4) You and I are paying more taxes than ever. Do not be fooled by the Galiger amendment. Even if the mil levy goes down. The tax on your property goes up high enough that the $ amount you pay in tax is higher. 5) Consumers pay ALL taxes. I know this is hard for some to believe, but businesses have to pass their tax burden on to consumers in the form of higher costing goods and services, or they will go out of business. Why do I bring that up? Because Jeffco Schools would have you believe that your personal mil levy is nothing to complain about since businesses in Jefferson County are taxed at a higher rate than person property. The truth is, you and I pay it whenever we go shopping. If you are interested in making your feelings known PLEASE call, write or visit Jeffco School Board of Education.President Jeffco School Board: John DestefanoEmail [email protected] | |||||||||||||||||
